What is Hukka?

Hukka AI is a Finnish technology company developing an intelligent SaaS-solution to measure, analyse and reduce food waste in professional kitchens. Our service was first introduced in the spring of 2020 and Hukka has been taken in to use in hundreds of kitchens during the last year. We have developed our service, and will continue to develop it, according to our customers’ terms, aiming to provide an easy, affordable and an intelligent tool to reduce food waste. There is a long road ahead of us but the objective is clear; more sustainable and profitable professional kitchens without any initial investments!

Our generation has to solve the problem in a rational way!

Despite the fact that nearly 800 million people go to bed hungry every night, about one-third of all food produced goes to waste. Did you know that food waste produces four times the emissions of all flights in the world combined? Or if food waste was a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases? Food waste is a global challenge with huge environmental and human impacts. It is also very expensive, costing the world 1 trillion dollars every year.

We believe that companies are agents of societal change. Although sustainable development is a key value for many companies in the food ecosystem, making for example an investment with only sustainability related gains might be difficult. Therefore we think it is realistic to argue that the challenges of sustainable development are solved at best when there are options for companies, which are also better, more affordable and more sustainable than the alternatives, in that order! Further, what could possibly be better than reducing your carbon footprint and increasing profit at the same time?

The story started in a Finnish school

Hukka owns its legacy to a Finnish school, where one of our founders, a teacher, noticed that despite the students acted responsible and took only a sufficient amount of food on their plates, the left-over food from the buffet ended up to waste anyway. In the restaurant sector, the biggest food waste is produced commonly already before the food even makes it to customers’ plates.

In a quest to find a solution to this problem, our founders realized that there are already many solutions in the market. However, it was also evident that most of these solutions require substantial initial investments to for example smart scale systems, are too expensive to use (especially if the organisation has many restaurants), require a ERP-system to function or are just too difficult or complicated for the user; a busy kitchen should focus on making top quality food and serve its customers! 

This led the Hukka-team to develop an easy-to-use software-only solution, which does not require any initial investments; an intelligent data analysis combined with an internet connection and a terminal device will do the job!
